An Ethiopian Air Force C-130E shot down by TPLF

An Ethiopian Air Force operated Lockheed C-130E Hercules aircraft belonging to Squadron 15 at Debre Zeit Air Base was shot down on 23rd June near Gijet in the Tigray region by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), killing all people on board.

The C-130E Hercules – serial 1564 (c/n 382-3822) had been donated to the Ethiopian Airforce by the United States in 2014.

At the time of shooting, the aircraft was reportedly carrying troops, explosives and ammunition to an unknown destination crashing near Gijet town in Saharti Samre district of Tigray region.

The TPLF fighting against the incumbent Ethiopian government claimed it shot down the aircraft.

Tension between TPLF and the Ethiopian government has increased over time which led to the launching of the military offensive against the TPLF in Tigray region by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in November, 2020.

Following the incident, only two of the tactical transports “c-130B & L-100-30” have been left operational with 15 Squadron at Debre Zeit due to one of the two C-130Bs being reported to have crashed in August 2013 and the second L-100-30 being withdrawn from active service.

Based on the online footage, the aircraft was totally damaged & investigations are underway.
