On Saturday, Athens International Airport (AIA) welcomed a full flight from New York operated by Delta Air Lines, the first carrier to restart flights between the United States and Greece since the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The first flight took off from New York International John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport on May 28. On Saturday morning, it landed at AIA where the plane was welcomed with the traditional water arch.

After a year of limited international travel, Americans are actively seeking new adventures in 2021 and the mix of ancient sites and island resorts make Greece a popular choice,” said Roberto Ioriatti, Delta’s Senior Vice President of the Transatlantic and Transpacific Pricing and revenue Management.

The flight marks a new start for Delta airlines in Greece and marks a significant milestone for the Greek tourism industry, an indispensable part of the Greek economy. The airline will fly from its two most prominent U.S. hubs when Atlanta service joins New York-JFK in July.
