Qatar Airways Marks a Decade of Connecting Maputo, Mozambique to the World

Qatar Airways celebrates its 10-year milestone of offering its services to Mozambique, with return flights from Doha to Maputo, operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. To celebrate this occasion, QR1361 from DOH-MPM was greeted with a water cannon salute on arrival.

In 2012, Qatar Airways inaugurated its services offering three weekly flights, operating its long-haul Boeing 777 aircraft.  In March 2016 it introduced the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route, the most modern aircraft type in its fleet. The award-winning airline increased its frequency due to the growing demand, and currently provides four weekly services to the Mozambican capital.

Qatar Airways’ Vice-President Africa, Hendrik du Preez, said:  “Africa is one of Qatar Airways’ key growth regions in its global network and we are delighted to be celebrating this milestone at Maputo International Airport.  Qatar Airways has shown its commitment to the African market as the only airline that never stopped flying to southern Africa during the pandemic. This allowed for the movement of medicines, delivering 20 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Mozambique, and essential travel between the region and the rest of the world.”

“By maintaining operations, we put ourselves in a favourable position to grow our services across the continent as people began travelling again we were able to increase frequencies in destinations such as Mozambique.”

Elsewhere in the region Qatar Airways started operations to Luanda, Harare and Lusaka in 2021 and restarted flights to Windhoek in mid-2022. It launched new services to Kano and Port Harcourt in Nigeria and addition to existing Lagos and Abuja flights.

More recently it announced a comprehensive codeshare agreement with Airlink in South Africa. This gives travellers to and from southern Africa more choices, enhanced services and greater connectivity between 45 destinations in 13 countries across the region.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations in Mozambique, Qatar Airways is offering savings up to 30 percent on fares from Mozambique until 11 November 2022.

A multiple award-winning airline, Qatar Airways was recently announced as the ‘Airline of the Year’ at the 2022 World Airline Awards, managed by the international air transport rating organisation,  Skytrax. The airline continues to be synonymous with excellence having won the main prize for an unprecedented seventh time (2011, 2012,  2015,  2017,  2019,  2021  and 2022), while also being named ‘World’s Best Business Class’,  ‘World’s  Best Business Class Lounge Dining’ and ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’.

Qatar Airways currently flies to more than 150 destinations worldwide, connecting through its Doha hub, International Airport, currently named the ‘Best Airport in the World” by Skytrax World Airport Awards 2022.
