The Dutch government is filing a lawsuit against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the downing of Malaysia Airlines passenger flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014. This was reported by the press service of the Dutch government.

The Netherlands submits all information on the MH17 case to the ECHR. With this complaint, the government of the Netherlands provides maximum support for individual complaints of relatives of those killed in the plane crash.

“Ensuring justice for the 298 victims of the MH17 crash and their relatives has been and remains a top priority for the Cabinet of Ministers. The step that we are taking today, sending the case to the ECHR and thereby supporting the complaints of the next of kin as much as possible, brings us closer to our goal,” the statement reads.

The Netherlands will also report this step to the UN Security Council.
Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was shot down in the skies over Donbas on July 17, 2014. There were 298 people on board – 283 passengers and 15 crew members. They all died. This disaster, in terms of the number of deaths, became the largest in the history of civilian aviation since September 11, 2001. At that time, the area where the plane crashed was controlled by pro-Russian militants.
